Motorcycle Tours in Iceland: Guided Off-Road Adventures

Small groups. Expert guides. Enduro bikes included.

Overview

Our Iceland motorcycle tours take you where rental cars can't go: across the gravel F-roads, black-sand deserts and river crossings of the interior highlands. You ride a prepared enduro bike, in a small group, behind a guide who knows every track.

We run two routes. Horn to Horn crosses the whole island, from Keflavic to the norteasternmost tip. Classic loops through the soutwest sector of the island, starts and finishes in Reikjavic while crossing the southern highlands and the lava fields of Mt. Hekla. Both are fully guided, with accommodation and support included.

Below you'll find what makes motorcycling in Iceland unique, who these tours suit, and a side-by-side comparison to help you pick your route.

Why ride a motorcycle in Iceland

F-roads: the real Iceland starts where the asphalt ends
F-roads are unpaved, rugged mountains tracks that cross the remote interior Highlands. They open for only a few months each summer, once the snow has melted, and are restricted to four-wheel-drive vehicles, which is why most visitors never see them. The surface varies from loose gravel and sand to corrugated stretches and river crossings, making them ideal terrain for enduro riding. These roads are the gateway to the highlands, and riding them with an experienced guide means travelling with someone who knows every crossing and how it changes with the weather.

The highlands: a desert in the middle of the North Atlantic
Iceland's interior is a vast, largely uninhabited plateau. There are no towns, almost no buildings and very few people, just open land stretching to the horizon. In a single day you can ride through black sand plains, lava fields, rhyolite and bassalt mountains streaked with colors due to geothermal activity, active calderas and watch ice caps rise in the distance.

A landscape shaped by volcanoes
Iceland sits on one of the most active volcanic zones in the world, and you feel it under your wheels. The tracks run across black sand deserts, fields of light grey pumice and old lava flows covered in thick green moss, past vents where steam rises from the ground. The surface and the colours change from one valley to the next, so no two days on an Iceland motorcycle trip feel the same.

Riding responsibly
The highlands look wild and untouched because people have looked after them. In Iceland, driving off marked tracks is against the law, and for good reason: a single set of tyre marks can scar the moss and volcanic soil for decades. Every Fjallventure route follows legal tracks, planned by guides who know where riding is allowed and how to leave the land as we found it. You get the full adventure, and the highlands stay just as remarkable for the riders who come after you.

Who our Iceland tours are for

Our Iceland motorcycle tours are designed for riders who want a genuine adventure rather than a sightseeing trip on two wheels.

  • You're comfortable off-road. You can ride standing on the pegs, hold a steady pace on gravel and handle loose surfaces with confidence. You don't need racing experience.
  • You want to ride, not organise. We take care of the bikes, routes, accommodation, support vehicle and paperwork, so you can focus on the riding.
  • You like small groups. A small group means more time on the bike, less waiting and a guide who has time to give you individual advice.
  • You travel solo or with friends. We love having groups of friends sharing adventures but we take pride in including solo travelers with the group and making them feel part of the Fjallventure family.

Not sure about your level?
Each tour page sets out its difficulty level. The Classic offers an easier alternative on some days, which makes it a good choice for groups with mixed experience. Tell us about your riding and we'll recommend the route that suits you best.
